What the actual confusing hell was this? I got some of it, but most.. No. It felt at points more like a later volume than a first. There were some parts I liked, but for most I was confused.

While the plot and concept of the story is dark, the mood between characters can range from broodingly dramatic to humorous without being overly cartoony.

I was attracted to Knights of Sidonia as a long time fan of mecha anime and even further intrigued by it's inclusion of Eldritch style horror.

What Tsutomou-san accomplishes is that even though the characters involved are clones, that doesn't make them any less compelling and still present diverse personalities.

I think maybe this is a slow starting series. It must be, given how much people like this series. Because this volume was slow and did not pull me in. Maybe I’m just not a sci-fi person, though.

We’re thrown into the story, a weird space-based world, where there are aliens to fight. Nagate has been living separated from everyone else, though, and doesn’t even realize that there are other humans around that could help him. He’s one of the few humans left who eat real food, and he has no real training with space-fighting and the machines, but he’s been using one in secret.

It’s odd to me how he’s been hiding without realizing there are other humans so close by, and yet he stumbled upon them all of a sudden now that he’s alone. Either way, though, he’s living in an odd world and pushed into helping fight. It gets bad, bloody and deadly, and doesn’t end well for them, either.

Maybe it is that I’m just not a sci-fi person, because I’m not really interested in picking up the next one. This one was slow and odd, and didn’t pull me into the story, world, or characters.

I picked this up knowing nothing about it, but the synopsis on the back sounded good on Amazon. I was disappointed because it was hard to follow. It’s got some non-linear story telling that I normally kind of like, but in this case was confusing. Also, a few of the characters are drawn so similarly that I kept getting confused about who was who. I probably won’t be following this series.

Nagate has lived in the inner belly of Sidonia his whole life, but the death of his grandfather forces him out into the upper layer of the colony ship where the rest of the human race lives. After the destruction of Earth and the Solar System by the Gauna, Sidonia is now home to the only remaining humans in Space, searching for a new home and a refuge away from the aliens who still threaten them. Nagate is given a terribly strong weapon and becomes a pilot for a large robot space suit. He and a team of pilots are sent on a routine mission to mine an asteroid, but things go sideways when they find a Gauna under the surface.
