4/2016: I just finished this again. I know it's been my third time reading it so I must have missed a journal entry somewhere. This time I cried. Ha! It's so much easier to understand and enjoy now that I've been to some of the places Austen lived, been to Bath a couple times, done the whole Regency reenactment thing a couple times, and done extensive study on Austen and the way people of her era lived. I just love every bit of it! Setting this one back on my collection shelf. I wonder when I'll pick it up again?

1/2008: I am so thrilled to have finished this book! This is the first classic I have ever read cover to cover, finished, and thoroughly enjoyed!! I loved every part of this book and am now inspired to not only read Austen's other works, but to go out and find me a seamstress to sew me some beautiful 18th Century dresses! :)

11/2021: It's really been a struggle this past year or so to get into a book. I find that nothing really sounds good, so I've been going back to old favorites. Reading through P&P this last month, I was really focused on how Darcy and Lizzie sent one another mixed signals. One exchange really struck me---when they're working things out toward the end of the story. Lizzie asks why he looked like he didn't care about her last time he came to call and he said it was because she didn't seem like she wanted his attentions. She said it was because she was embarrassed at her previous behaviour and he said he was embarrassed of his own as well. She says, "You might have talked to me more when you came to dinner." He says, "A man who had felt less might."

And isn't that just the way it is when we don't communicate well? How many loves have been lost to poor communication. We must humble ourselves and be vulnerable if we ever hope to have a Jane Austen-esque romance last a lifetime!

9/2020: I just finished reading this for the fourth time last week. This time around, Mr. Bennet was my favorite character. The conversation with his wife, and his general cynical sarcasm just really cracked me up this time. I guess I was in a mood!

I cannot believe it took me so long to finally decide to read this. I was so afraid I would not be able to enjoy it but I was definitely wrong. The way the characters interact with one another and the way in which you can just visualize what is happening is wonderful!

I finally did it! It took me three weeks to read this small book, but as it was written in the early 19th century, the writing was quite dense and flowery and I could not sit with it for long periods, but I did it and I am glad that I did.

I feel rather unqualified to review Pride and Prejudice not only because it is a revered classic which makes reviewing intimidating, but I would be writing a reiew from a modern perspective, one born from living 200 years beyond when this was written. However, I do have some thoughts that I would like to share.

For its time, I can understand why this was such a beloved contemporary and I can see this being a wonderful read for young ladies of the era. From her writing you can tell of Austen's intelligence and humor as she wrote interesting characters and created some very witty banter among them, particularly with regard to Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth is smart, articulate, stubborn, and outspoken. Darcy seems to be rather strodgy, arrogant, and condescending. With those two we seem to find one of the original slow-burn, "hate-to-love" or "opposites attract" tropes which are now so prevalent in YA literature.

Though I am sure Pride and Prejudice needs no summation, the entire book essentially revolves around the Bennett family, which includes Mr. and Mrs. Bennett and their five female daughters. Ultimately, the book is centered on the quest to find each of the daughter's a suitable husband. Now here comes the hindrance of my modern perspective. This book, in my opinion, had a distinct lack of plot or rather, the plot seems rather frivolous from today's vantage point. A book purely devoted to obtaining the most beneficial, handsome, and advantageous men for young women? While I do recognize the importance of such connections during this time, I found the fact that this was ultimately the entirety of story a bit dull.

Having said that, once I was able to find a flow with the reading, adapting to the languange and pushing through the first several chapters I ended up becoming quite attached to Elizabeth and Jan and ended up enjoying it overall. I find that this will leave a lasting impression and would not object to reading more of Austen's work in the future.

I loved how Jane Austin made her characters relatable to the readers. On some level, you were able to imagine those characters living in our present despite it being written so long ago. Not something that can be easily done!
