Is this an amazing book? No. Was it fun and hot? Yes. Quick erotica read if you’re into kink. The plot was not very good or interesting, but character interactions were good. A note: I switched from the audiobook to the ebook about halfway through in large part because I hate the male narrator’s voice.

Over-hyped fan-fiction

As I'm branching out in my romance/erotica reads, I guess this would count as my first 'enemies-to-lovers' trope...maybe?? Because there really isn't anything that points to 'love' in this novel. This is just pages upon pages of sex in what's known as 'consenting non-consent' situations. Don't get me wrong, they were hot & steamy (could have done with a few less Daddy's / baby girl's), but I didn't find that either character was really fleshed out beyond their bedroom romps, interspersed with redundant inner dialogues.

Especially if part of your book blurb mentions that the MFC wants to "rise to his challenge and win [her] fortune back" I wanna see some plot points, and that's where the story really, really fell flat. There's just nothing but a loose story that goes from A to B, with a quick wrap-up that really made no sense.

The whole Jasmine/Jafar angle is completely nonsensical, and IMO is the only reason this series got the hype it did. Pure clickbait. This is the 2nd Katee Robert's story I've read now, and I'm not fully on the bandwagon. It makes me really hesitant to read Neon Gods.

This book is pure smut. It's why we picked it up. I do like this one more than Neon Gods, however, I am getting a little tired of the mafia boss thing. I've seen enough of it. I did not like the relationship between Jafar and Jasmine, It seemed kind of forced, and there wasn't a lot of chemistry between them. They also used a lot of 'daddy' and 'baby girl' talk, which I am not a huge fan of. However, CNC was a strong kink in this one, which I very much appreciated. The ending seemed a little rushed and the background characters were underdeveloped, but who cares? We aren't reading this for the plot.

I really hate term of endearment “baby” but I loved how Jasmine HERSELF overcame shame and judgement to OWN her desires.
Spoiler Then she took it a step further and became literally the queen she already was.

Similar feelings to my criticism of Neon Gods - so much telling, especially within the interiority of inner monologue, and not a lot of showing, or of propelling the story or characterization through dialogue and interaction between the characters.

Delightful smut, but I think I have to resign myself to the fact that I won't get all I'm looking for from a Katee Robert book. (Which breaks my heart a little, since I adore her.)

For Jasmine, narrator Lessa Lamb was a dream.
For Jafar, narrator Jack Calihan really did not do it for me. His voice was SO deep and harsh in its delivery...it kind of sounded like he wasn't fully comfortable with the material, or thought he had to push over-the-topness onto it. The text is over the top by itself, it doesn't need any help!
