This was a highly enjoyable sequel. Hank Green’s writing really works for me because it has just the right amount of cautious optimism. His novels highlight the sometimes terrifying consequences of living solely online without building communities. April’s character development is exactly what I was hoping for, and I LOVE the way everything was wrapped up so well at the end. Despite there being a few points of the view, I really felt concerned for all the characters.

I think the “Carls duology” is really important in our current world, and there are so many messages woven throughout that really resonated with me. But as well as loving the book’s meaningfulness, the addition of newly-created Altus really worked for me. Imaging myself in that virtual reality was one of the most gripping parts of the entire novel. I can’t wait to see what Hank Green writes in the future because this was an impressive debut series.

"You're radically collaborative, profoundly empathetic, and deeply communal. Everyone who tells you anything different is selling the fear that is the only thing that can break that nature."

I initially struggled to get into this book. Likely because I had forgotten what happened in the first one and stubbornly refused to read a summary. However, after acting as a detective for the first 50 ish pages I really got into in. The pacing gradually increased and truly left me gripped and crying by the end.

Hank Green always manages to not shy away from the challenging reality of everything and the problems facing us (many of our own creation), while also leaving me feeling hopeful in the goodness of people.

Hank green’s duology was the perfect combination of fast past fun sci fi and deeply thoughtful narrative on the human experience. I loved these characters, and ideas it brought forth for consideration. Will definitely re read.

I enjoyed but had mixed-ish feelings about the first book, but I think this is the rare sequel that improves upon its predecessor. The audio format is also excellent.
