I think the tone was meant to be lighthearted, but it came across as arrogant, especially on the first 30 or so pages. I also would have preferred the book to be about any specialisation but obstretics and gynaecology, because I simply cannot stand men talking disrespectfully about women in labour (not the writer so much as some of his senior colleagues). There was also some pretty horrible advice in there like taking the pill back to back to get rid of your period, instead of using a menstrual cup which also allows you to have sex without any blood involved whilst actually maintaining a healthy period. Yet, the book did give good insight into the failings of medical and nursing degrees, the inefficiency of NHS systems, and the absurd working hours of junior doctors. It was also well-written and kept me hooked right from the start. Funny, though, is not a word I would use to describe this memoir.

A quick read. The autobiography of a physician describing that absolute brutality of the training to become a doctor. It left me feeling quite good about my decision to instead become a genetic counselor.

This was a quick read but really insightful, funny, and heartbreaking.
There's so much variety to the stories Kay tells, but I was also surprised about how often doctors and nurses have to remove things from inside people! I like how he can make the reader laugh and then make them tear up in the next section. His sense of humour is brilliant and I liked that he was honest about his opinion on things such as home births, homeopathy and people who get their science from facebook.
This is a really entertaining yet important book.

“You work yourself to exhaustion, pushing yourself beyond what could be reasonably expected of you, and end up constantly feeling like you don’t know what you’re doing. Sometimes it just feels that way, and you’re actually doing fine – and sometimes you really don’t know what you’re doing.”

Very funny yet heartbreakingly sad.
