Very interesting concept. I only wish there was a map and a little more back story to the world Fletcher lives in.

~3 stars.

I read this book in less than 24 hours, it kept me entertained and I enjoyed the characters, yet I can't get myself to give it the full 4 stars for 3 reasons:

1. Demon summoners sounds so badass and yet the book made it come across a bit... juvenile. Felt a bit too much like I was back in elementary school watching Pokemon. More aspects besides the demon summoning came across as a tad juvenile as well - some of the relationships and conflicts, personality traits too, even in the adult characters. Was this novel supposed to be a middle grade novel? If so, I suppose this reason is a bit harsh. If not, it stands.

2. Though it kept me entertained and sucked me in, a few world-building tactics were a bit weird. Sometimes I found myself confused at how things in this world work. I wish SO BADLY that this was one of those novels that provided a map in the beginning/end of the text.

3. The plot felt too familiar and expected.

Even though I had a few issues, I'll certainly still be picking up [b:The Inquisition|25689056|The Inquisition (Summoner, #2)|Taran Matharu|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1446573037s/25689056.jpg|45517455]... I just have to know what happens! Most importantly,
Spoiler I ship Fletcher and Slyva so hard that I just need to know if they end up together - that heartfelt moment Fletcher pulled at the end makes me hopeful...

This was not the first book I read. I read The Outcast first. I didn't read the description of the book before I began reading, so I was surprised when this book didn't continue with Arcturus's story. Learning about Fletcher was a novel experience. Learning about his difficulties growing up and the his life once he escapes to Vocans Academy is a testament to anyone that they can overcome if they put their mind to it! And overcome. And overcome. Fletcher is smart, but he has to be to outsmart the bullies and the out right hatred that some of the members of the nobility feel for him. I can't wait to read the next book in the series to find out if he can outmaneuver one of his biggest foes.

This was one of the oldest books on my TBR so took a chance in it and was pleasantly surprised! This was enjoyable from start to finish, it was a super quick read and it was fun. I liked that it touched on some more serious topics without getting overly dark.

I think this reads at the younger end of YA so I would definitely be happy recommending this to younger family and keeping it for my son to hopefully get into. 😊

I wasn't able to finish this. The premise was really interesting, but the writing itself was just not great. Fletcher was boring, and the pacing was horrible. Everything was being "told", rather than shown.

I enjoyed it, but I was expecting a lot more. I liked the characters and the concept of the demons and the summoning. It just wasn't as exciting as I had hoped. And some things were a little too convenient (especially the ending).

So it was a nice, easy, enjoyable read. But not that special.
