We received this as a selection in one of Charlotte's Amazon book box picks. I wasn't sure what to expect from the title, but it's quickly become one of Charlie's favorite books. In the book, the main character Sophie takes a squash home from the farmer's market and befriends it. When the squash began to rot, I worried about how the book might end and what 'mother-daughter' conversations I was going to have to with Charlie. Fellow parents (and gift-givers to small children): never fear, Sophie's squash gets planted, spends a winter taking a nap, and then grows two new squash for Sophie to care for.

Sophie picks out a squash at the farmer's market, but instead of it becoming her vegetable potion at her next meal, the squash becomes Bernice, her new BFF. Bernice is a perfect size for holding, bouncing on her knee and a perfect size to hold. But Bernice starts to grow some age spots over time. A farmer at the market recommends some fresh dirt. Sophie buries Bernice in a little bit of dirt right before the first snow fall. What a surprise she gets next spring!

November 2019 - lots of fun to read aloud, especially one-on-one since the illustrations can be subtle and it's a bit on the longer side. Totally charming.

A touching story about a girl and her squash. Clever illustrations; make sure you follow the cat throughout the book.
