A dark, introspective memoir that tackles racism-specifically microaggressions-suicide, abuse, mental health, and complicated friendships. The art style is beautiful with cartoonish people against realistic detailed backgrounds. The story cuts right to the emotion to help understand what the author went through.

I also know for a fact a professor I had for a writing class is putting this straight into the syllabus.

This is a graphic memoir about a Korean-American girl's coming-of-age. I didn't love it as much as I expected, but it’s a solid 3.5 star for me, and I would recommend it to anyone. Deb JJ Lee's narrative of being a Korean-American with immigrant parents in a suburban New Jersey area addresses racism and the feeling of not truly belonging anywhere, and I think the last one is something we all can relate to. It was hard to read about Deb's experience, especially with their mum (who was emotionally and physically abusive), but the interactions with their dad were heartwarming, though he was complicit/complacent about their Mom's abuse. I also could relate to quite a few of Deborah's problems, particularly their mental health issues and their limited number of friends.

this book is gorgeous, and heart wrenching, and just so REAL. this book went way farther into the emotional moments than other graphic memoirs i’ve read, and i think it really does it well. started reading this in the middle of the night and couldn’t put it down, finished it at around sunrise. i do not regret it.

This book was an emotional ride and wonderfully compelling. The art was beautiful and I could feel the emotions the author put into the book. Would recommend for anyone who’s battled with depression and feeling lost with themselves
