a little overrated but still enjoyable. it reminded me of one of those "night after high school graduation" movies (which i believe was the point). the illustrations at the beginning of every chapter got on my nerves for some reason.

Do you enjoy movies like Superbad and Knocked Up, that have a bit of a whacked out sense of humor that is somehow so wrong yet rings so true?

Then you will enjoy reading I Love You, Beth Cooper by Larry Doyle.

Denis has had a crush on Beth Cooper since the start of high school when he was seated behind her in class. Beth doesn't know he exists. But when Denis gets up to give his graduation speech, he decides to proclaim his love for the star cheerleader. And it just gets crazier from there.

Want pictures? That's Denis on the cover *points to the left* and at the start of each chapter, we get a picture of his current physical state (which goes through many phases over the single night that the book takes place).

This book is hilarious. Larry Doyle used to write for the Simpsons and the randomness of that show is apparent in the way the characters in this book think and interact. But, like Judd Apatow's films, there is a lot of heart and soul in this book that makes it hard not to live. If you're easily offended, then you might want to stay away, but if you've come to terms with the weirdness that is being a teenager, you will giggle your way through this quick read.

Aww. This book got such poor reviews, but I guess it is all about expectations. I was expecting a snarky teeny bopper rom com. I got something much funnier than that. So I am quite pleased. I read this book for the purpose of total fiction, humor, entertainment, and it fit the bill. If you like Haaissen, you'll probably get a kick out of this one too. If you're looking to identify with a high school nerd character to relive and give voice to your own pain, it's not going to happen for you here. This is rom com fluff and it's pretty darned good as that genre goes.

Funny book... it reads like a teen movie (and later became one), with a load of continuing conflicts during a night of self-discovery. Definitely a quick read, and worth it.

In the end, I was glad I read the novel and will look for Doyle's next release with some anticipation. I hope it's not a sequel but something strange and funny and maybe a bit more satirical.

A completely dumb book that I enjoyed reading, much as I find a host of bad movies really entertaining but refuse to admit it.
