This book was beautifully written at times. The plot dragged and I’m not sure how it won a Pulitzer.
And by the end it has you sympathizing with a damn Nazi which had me feeling very uncomfortable.
Don’t read unless you like historical war fiction.

I truly went into this book not knowing much, so I feel like I should’ve been a little more prepared. For the content and time period, it didn’t feel too terribly heavy or intense even though what they were going through definitely was. I think some of the worst things were brushed over. The audiobook got me through the majority of the book, but I enjoyed reading it physically to finish it up and sit with the story snd characters a little bit longer. Overall, I enjoyed it but I’m gonna need a little break from these literary books!

This was overall a good book. However, it does not rank higher for me for several reasons. Certain portions of the book were impactful, with beautiful writing, but it was more often that there was not enough action to keep me interested in reading. This book's topic is very profound, by nature, so I feel that the larger theme of the ways war and life ravage us is solidified, but there was something off about the character stories and the way they intertwined that's hard to put a finger on, but that prevented this book from being a 4 or 5 star. It was good, it was moderately impactful, but I don't think I would recommend this to anyone unless they were super in to historical fiction, mainly because it's a slower read.

I did like this book, but it was a slow read, and I struggled with how I felt about one of the main characters. I didn’t like what he was doing but at the same time, I knew he had no choice, and ultimately was very sad at what ended up happening. It’s not often that a book can shock me, and this one SHOOK me at the ending. Overall, I liked it but I wouldn’t reread and I wish it would have had an underlying subplot to make it more interesting.
