I love Greg Iles, and this was good - complex characters, complex plot, but it wasn't my favorite of his.

An ok book. Highly recommended by my boss. I didnt really get into it. Kept waiting for some big reveal that never really happened.

It was really hard for me to get into this book. It started out slowly and it wasn't until almost halfway through that I started caring about any of the characters. The action picks up a lot in the second half and kept me interested until the end. This definitely wasn't my favorite Iles novel but it was good enough to want to finish. I would recommend this book to people interested in the World War 2 genre.

Other sources list this as book 1 and it was published first so I have read it as book 1 in the series.
But what can I say except this was so long, it just kept going, I thought it would never end.
I think if you ask me in a number of months what I remember of the book, all I will recall is how long it was.
Other than that nothing really grabbed my attention, and the length made it difficult to maintain interest, when otherwise it was not that riveting.

A complicated plot that takes place mostly in the late 1980's (USSR still exists, as does a divided Germany), with flashbacks to World War II. This is not my favorite type of book (Nazis, KGB, and Stasi), but the author pulled me in and it was quite a ride!

A very week 3 stars. Maybe I've read too many thrillers this summer, but I just wasn't as impressed as I should have been with this book. The dialogue is good and it moves along okay, but perhaps 695 pages are a little too many. I don't usually mind long reads if there's a payoff but the conspiracy here was a one-trick pony (did Greg Iles really need to take 4/5ths of the book to explain the big twist anyone reading knew the whole time?) that got stretched too far. Also, for what is allegedly a massive global conspiracy, these people sure do write down a lot of stuff. Overall, a good book that could have cut several random characters/plots out to shorten the page length and made it a tighter read.

I finished the last half of this book in a day and loved it. Greg Iles needs to stick to historical fiction. He's great at it. This book was pretty complicated with a LOT of characters, but Iles did a great job of keeping them all straight and setting the scene a bit before diving into subsequent parts of the story.

This was also a great suspense novel, Iles seemed to find an unexplained part of WW2 and created a great fictional piece around explaining the disappearance of a very highly ranked Nazi in 1941.

I really liked this book and would recommend it to anyone who has the time to slog through a 600 page book, but who also wants a good, exciting historical fiction novel.
