Stumbled across this in a bookstore. The title and beautiful cover caught my attention, and when I read the description, I was hooked. Completely original, fantastic world-building, horrifying and un-putdownable. At its heart, this is a story of the power of a mother’s love in the face of some really nasty characters and circumstances. I’ll be thinking about this book for a long time.

I appreciate the feminist themes woven into the story. It hits a few points that made me stop and think!
There is such a strong portrayal of motherly love and questions of what makes you who you are. The bond between Dev and Cai is very dear. Ultimately, this book is about the bond between mother and child and the lengths someone would go to protect their family. I wasn't expecting the book to weigh so heavily into that theme, but it's a pleasant surprise.

Somehow this book manages to be different from anything else I have read. Horrifying and captivating in equal measures, the storytelling and characters had me hooked from the first page.
Devon is a woman with a mission and the power of love behind her. The story is thrilling, fantastical, drawing on folklore in some places, but also firmly set in 21st century UK.
I couldn't put it down, it was excellent and kept up the same level of excitment and intrigue throughout. I was second guessing every twist and I loved it.

Devon will do anything to save her son, even if it means facing both of their monstrous personas.

This book was quite gripping and action packed. The characters were gritty and unapologetically imperfect. I appreciated it as a stark metaphor for patriarchy and what breaking a patriarchal society would entail.

Quite enjoyable!
