I am going to think about "Hard but at people" (Harry Caray, as quoted in this book) every time a player lines out/grounds out directly to a position player for the rest of my life

I’m not surprised I gave this five stars in the slightest. Always good to learn some more about the history of my team, especially since I wasn’t around for the 2016 World Series to feel what these people felt. It makes me even happier to be so unapologetic about loving this team, even as people claim that it’s crumbling. The writing is brilliant and clearly portrays the strange emotions of watching something like the most important baseball game in 108 years.

The way Cohen writes pulls you right into the misery of the "lovable losers" and their fanbase.

This was a pleasant surprise. I read it with a tutoring student whose parents requested I get him to appreciate reading. He loves sports so we chose this. It’s surprisingly poetic and at times beautifully written. The story of the Cubs and their 108-year drought is in fact the story of baseball, a weird little sport that began as an enterprise staffed by gritty, outcast farm boys that would fist fight each other on the field. Rich Cohen’s ability to tie in the personal to these stories could have been self-indulgent, but it also works, capturing the deranged and proud victim psychology of Cubs fan. I don’t even like baseball, but reading his recap of Game 7 gave me chills. Anyone with a pulse can’t help but get excited by that ridiculous game, where the Cubs essentially had to sweat out a fever before finally winning.
