I honestly just wanted to read this before re-watching the movie so I could compare the two. From what I remember of the movie, it's a relatively faithful adaptation with some streamlining of the plot and world and some character changes I think to make things more conventional for a YA dystopia film of the time. In the book, R is very reflective and poetic in his internal monologue. There are a lot of philosophical musings about life and humanity. I admit that sometimes I did skim through these parts. There are many dark subjects discussed by the characters, but what happens during the course of the story is fairly tame apart from some quick violent scenes. Do check the content warnings, though.

The book creates a more somber and depressing atmosphere than the movie which was more comedic. The book is slow and does not keep the readers attention.

The books are a product of its time. I’m glad I opted to listen to the audiobook instead of reading it; I heard the ellipses of the zombie speak gets tedious. On the downside, listening to a man do a blaccent for a female character felt uncomfortable. It didn’t feel racist or like it was meaning to be offensive it just felt off. 

So many people may take issue that the zombie cure is literally love.

This book is extremely cheeseball and many people could have predicted that. I like when zombie media doesn’t take itself too serious and when there is

a cure

so I’m biased. 

The main love story is a bit wonky. I felt like I got to know R very well and Julie. And that R got to know Julie well through the organic interactions, but I felt that Julie hardly knew R. Most of his monologue takes place in his head since his zombie speech is lacking. 

This is still a cute teenager romance book. They actually talk like teens and I still felt a sense of danger. The zombie “culture” felt silly but in a fun way. I would recommend to any teen readers who were interested.
