Wack. Fun but a difficult read. Would recommend to those interested in “cultivating” their garden of classic lit.

This was a book club pick and I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed it. I do feel like I need to refresh on my history though as I have a feeling there were a lot of saitrical pokes at politicans, philosophers, etc. at the time that I missed. Very funny though - great to read a book that old and find humor in it even today. Not many books today could stand that test.

In "the best of all possible worlds", Voltaire gave us Candide (and his strange journey around the world).
First published in 1759, Voltaire presents an exciting tale about love and free-will/determinism. Candide's fantastical story focuses on life cliches, personal struggles, and other peculiar adventures. Moreover, this humorous fiction parodies religion, governments and philosophy pleasantly.

Candide, "the most unaffected simplicity" person and the protagonist of this tale, is the bastard nephew of the Baron Thunder-ten-Tronckh in Westphalia. The protagonist falls deeply in love with Cunégonde, the Baron's daughter. Consequently, when the Barron knows about Candide's desire for his daughter, he evicts Candide out of his castle.
The humorous protagonist finds himself captured by Bulgar (Prussian) military recruiters. He is forced to fight a battle between the Bulgars and the Avars. Overwhelmed by these peculiar events, he escapes to Holland. So, it's from this starting point that Candide's life circumstances start to be more humorously peculiar.

Candide travels in several places around the Globe; Portugal, Argentina, Paraguay, Italy, Turkey are just some of the countries where Candide spreads his magic.
The protagonist's optimism is a major detail of the story. His innocence and naiveness put him into unusual situations throughout the tale.
Leibnizian optimism is directly criticized by Voltaire. For that reason, the characters of the story are indirectly and directly affected by Candide's optimism.

Voltaire introduced historical events on his story. For example, Lisbon's 1755 earthquake is a natural phenomenon presented in Candide's tale.
This short theological novel has an interesting sarcastic tone about certain philosophical topics (i.e. the problem of evil). Furthermore, Voltaire criticizes the inquisition in a period where minds were slowly changing ( Age of Enlightenment).

Overall, Voltaire's philosophical novella conveys exceptional messages about life and its circumstances. Candide is a genius work with several amusing moments that will engage any reader.
