One of the best Sandman stories, beautifully illustrated by P. Craig Russell.

Excellent Gaiman and excellent Sandman. The illustrations are as beautiful as the prose. After reading the story I flipped thru it again just looking at the illustrations. Wonderful.
Be sure to read the piece at the end wherein Gaiman discusses the origin of the story. Makes one wonder about the provenance of any story.
After finishing this I started on the P. Craig Russell version. Should make for an interesting comparison between illustrated novel vs. graphic novel.

Gaiman's prose is always a joy to read and Russell's images are always a joy to behold. 'Nuff said!
If you read the previous illustrated version you should read this one as well. If you haven't read the previous illustrated version than you should. Comparing the two takes on the same story gives a deeper look at both.
And if you read the afterward on the illustrated version you must read the afterword on this! 10 year old confessions should not be ignored.

Some elements were just…extremely problematic for me. But still, an interesting little story, if only for the fact that Gaiman made up the fact that it's supposedly an old tale adapted into the Endless (spoiler alert: he made up the whole story)
