Right before the end I was going to give the book 3 stars, but the ending bumped it up one star.

This is a book that is over 100 years old and as such it is filled with colonial and even racist language when speaking about the countries and cultures that our protagonist meets. This is something to have in mind when reading the book, and as such I would never recommend it to children even though they might have been its intended audience. It is great as an easily read historian text, showing the view of the world in that time. It is important we don't forget how the white man colonised the world at the expense of indegenous peole and cultures. Even though this absolutely is not the focus of the book I think it is good to keep in mind when reading a book so clearly from the white man's perspective.

took a very long time for me to get into the story, and I really only liked the first chapter and the last.
