A well researched book that delves into the history of Japan.
While I would not recommend this book for light or pleasure reading, it is definitely informative and would recommend it to anyone looking to learn more about Japans history.
I picked this one up to better acquaint myself with my families history.

I couldn’t find a physical or ebook copy of this book so I tried the audiobook. It was interesting, but with so many unfamiliar names of places and people, it was hard to keep up. I’ll try again with the physical/ebook

Listened to this while on the Shinkansen and while walking around Hiroshima. Japan has a much too rich and complex history for one book to be enough to get a real grasp on it but this was a good primer.

A good quick review of Japanese history that truly encompasses it all from the very beginning. Fair in its questioning of institutional historical orthodoxies.
Clements’ choice of introducing its chapters with a sort of story adds flair to the book. Although I have to admit that it took me a few chapters to catch that flow. This led me to some confusion and the realization that I might have to read the first part again.
