Lives up to the original Spiderwick series just as much as I expected. Also having now read some of Black's YA books, it's interesting to compare her two writing styles and the lore she (and DiTerlizzi) use as a backing for their plot. I love it.

An extension of the original Spiderwick Chronicles, yet very different. The main character is now Nicholas, a jarring change from the Grace twins and Mallory. Nicholas is full of angst and doubt, a somewhat chubby and quiet boy who is struggling to adjust to the fact that his Dad has now remarried and he has a new sister moving into his room. Plus, his new sister Laurie is eccentric and weird, going on about her book of fairies ....
So naturally Nicholas gets pulled into the hidden world of fairies, using Laurie's book as a guide to try to fix the mystical problems popping up around them. We even get to have a cross over of the two books - Nicholas and Laurie go to a book signing and meet the two authors in an attempt to get help and answers. They were absolutely no help (lame?), but they did come across Jared, Simon, and Mallory. At this point it becomes clear several years have passed and they are older and wiser. But they agree to try to help.
This book delved into deeper issues than the first series, including flawed characters who were probably more realistic with their doubt and bitterness, but I do miss the troublesome and brave Grace siblings.

Holly and Tony break the barrier by inserting themselves as the authors into the book! And what a fabulous surprise to be greeted by Jared and Simon again. This series follows old and new characters figuring out new sides of Fae

The protagonist was All (white-coded) Masc Colonizer Angst in a landscape actively in despoliation.

The nixie's voice in the audiobook was hard to listen to, and wouldn't have been better in print.

The (femme) foil knows about the previous series and isn't taken seriously by the protagonist.

I've got enough (read: too much) of this in my real life. This was too much Terebithia, not enough Fablehaven.
