The relationship was weird. There was too much plot smashed into too little pages. I had to re-read a couple pages because I got to the end of the page and said huh? When did that happen?

This is basically Anita Blake fights aliens instead of vampires - superstrong female character who kicks all the men in her life around.

Oh damn that cover is spicy.

Awaken Me Darkly is the most typical Urban Fantasy you would expect. And not the very good kind. The story is mediocre BUT, Gena’s writing style can sure carry a book and Mia’s badass level ain't half bad. Plus the white haired love interest is a bonus.

But wait! There's a twist.

This is not really Urban Fantasy. Got bamboozled by the good 'ol wrong tag trick. Been reading a good bunch of the book before I realized it's actually Paranormal Romance. So of course it missed the mark.

Color me unimpressed. Mia is "strong female lead" to the extreme, so much so that every other facet of personality she may have disappears. The romance wasn't great -- the only chemistry I felt was the tingle the author tells us about. The sex was whatever. And Mia's investigation was also a mess. Every plan they come up with made me think "really"? "Really? You're going to lure the guy to the police station by hoping protesters show up?" "Really? You're just going walk into the villain's house and expect to just shoot them and leave?" And speaking of the villain's house, there was some real hand-waving at the end, like the author was ready to just get things over with already. I won't be reading more.

Great series. Even though I read them out of order.

It pains me to say it, because I usually love Gena Showalter, but this book was not her best work. It's from several years ago, and that shows. Part of it is me, and my mindset going in. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for SF/UF. I absolutely hated the heroine - so tough she practically spit nails with every sentence. And I could not see any redeeming value in the hero. Gee, he imprisoned you, etc., etc. - let's jump his bones outside in the snow because you can't wait to go inside.

Does this series improve, I wonder, since I already have the next one in my house on my TBR.

Awaken Me Darkly is a book that was part of my romanceopoly pick and so I can't believe that I had to do this, but I had to DNF this book at 60%. I really went into this blindly and I do wish I had read reviews as I could have avoided this book altoghether. I really struggled with this one. The heroine is NOT my type of heroine. I am not sure where the author was going with this one here. Now first off, one of my red limits is heroine abusing men or the hero. And its definitely the case in this one. I just couldn't find this heroine resonating at all. I did love the hero though, so he is the reason I kept with this one for as long as I did. What I really struggled with was seeing the heroine so hateful towards any men in the story, even her partner. And she was so bipolar in certain scenarios that just didn't make sense to me. But this heroine was practically a sociopath in how she viewed men, and honestly she was such a example of a toxic feminists heroine. And quite frankly the hero deserves better than being with someone so abusive. Now having said this, does this mean I am going to give up on this series? Nope. I will give this series another try but I will research the best book to try it out with.

Awaken me darkly is the first book in the Alien Huntress series. I liked the book. I find the book funny at times. I loved the fact that the heroine would beat up on the hero and he would take it all in stride.
