A sweet, light romance between two tech nerds. Enjoyable fluff. The perfect use of Audible's Escape package.

Cover: Okay
Narration: Also okay. The male narrator spoke quite softly and it was sometimes hard for me to hear.
Hogwarts Sorting Hat: I think they both might be Ravenclaws.

Themes: gaming, friends, friends-to-lovers (roommates), Seattle area, male-dominated field

I am still not sure what prompted me to pick this book up as my familiarity with this author is based on her erotic fairytale retelling, one of which I liked (Crave: The Seduction of Snow White - see: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3072618566?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1) and the other which I really didn't (Ravish: The Awakening of Sleeping Beauty - see: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2778422565?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1).

This one thankfully worked better for me. At 153 pages this is a short little novel which worked well for my geeky heart. I liked playing video games and especially RPGs so the gaming part of this novel was very enjoyable for me.

Plus, having a heroine actually working in a tech field was a plus. I found her and the hero cute together and I was thoroughly charmed by them. Nothing earth shatteringly new here but everything is told with competence and a sense of fun. Recommended for a light weekend read.

I liked how the story played out and the mentioning of Supernatural and Sailor Moon. However, some of the language wasn’t that great and it was really explicit in certain chapters. Other than that, it was a great book!

2.5 rounded up.

This was overall cute. I enjoyed Tessa and Adam, especially Tessa’s growth as a character. Representation for nerds everywhere and having two programmers as the leads was cute. (And something I could relate to and understand since my husband is a programmer. I was proud of myself that I knew Unity was a real language!)

I also enjoyed the female cast. The male cast was a bit cringe and I wished they’d have been more fleshed out than being “gamer bros,” especially as a female gamer who has diverse gamer friends.

The writing needed a little work too - I know this is one of Yardley’s earlier works so she has improved, but there were parts that jumped around and I would get confused what was happening. The story could have been fleshed out more.

My biggest pet-peeve was having a character that was only described as “agoraphobic.” That’s it. Through the whole story it was poor agoraphobic girl - she can’t lose her home. It was really cringey and I honestly would have rated this one star for that alone, but I liked other pieces enough. So going in know that piece - because that’s the only way she’s described the whole novel.

Overall, a quick, fun read. Not really doing anything new or big. Just a simple contemporary romance between two nerds.

Got this one for free on Amazon. Pretty good read. Much more enjoyable if you're a gamer, so take that for what it is.

An adorable romance featuring all the nerdy stuff I liked in college. Almost weirdly specific to the point the MC has my birthday.
