After the events of Vicious Fae leave Elise in a tight spot with her kings - there are so many unknown variables that need to be addressed along with the mass of dark magic and artifacts that keep tying back to the Black Card and other adversaries. In a display of solidarity, Elise has to face what life will look like if she can't unite the four men she loves and truly figure out what happened to her brother, all while slowly coming to terms with the very real shadows in her own past.
This book is BEEFY. It took me three days to read, off and on with work and life events dragging my attention away, and I'm not going to BS you all - the first chunk of this book is slow as Christmas, but boy, when Christmas came, Santa delivered. (That made NO sense, unless you're reading this after reading the book) In proper review terms: The first half of this book is extremely character heavy, and if you find yourself annoyed with any of these characters you will hate it. Luckily for me, they own my ass and I'm in love with every single one of them so I ate up every dramatic, traumatic scene.
We get a lot in this book. There were so many moments that I've been rooting for to happen since book one and the pacing once the second half starts is glorious. I can't even begin to describe my whiplash between the development scenes and scenes that had me laughing, to the full on tears rolling down my cheeks at portions later on. Sometimes these would HAPPEN AT THE SAME TIME. Imagine me, sitting down with an iPad in front of my face like a three-year old with a crippling app addiction, sob-laughing at the screen. It was a sight, I'm sure. I adore them, I adore this series, and I'm genuinely having chest pains thinking about the next book being the last and being my last experience with them all. It's not fair and I want to keep them to myself forever.
I thought this book was a four star until I hit 70% and then I realized I was wrong and Valenti and Peckham put me in my place, as they rightly should. Rosalie is my child and I'd kill for her, that is all. Read this series.

Content warnings: violence, blood, grief, gore, murder (brutal murders, probably the worst I've seen in fiction in a bit, you're warned), talk of sexual assault/rape/abuse all in sexual nature, with a callback to it in another scene that made my stomach lurch, attempted sexual assault (it's stopped), coercion. There's blood, lots of blood, talk of suicide, suicidal thoughts, drug addiction, alcohol, and drugs, and probably more that I'm missing. If you've made it this far then you know what these scenes have to do with, prep yourself, take breaks, love you. X

Spice: 5/5
Witnessing the growth between the guys in this book is what makes it my favorite of the series. While a happy ending is what draws most people in and may have them preferring the last book when it comes to favorites, the character arcs here are what storytelling is all about. Seeing these characters start out one way and then slowly open up, struggle, fight, and grow into an even better version of themselves. I fully believe this is where you will fall in love with all of the kings if you haven't before getting to this book. The humor is still perfectly timed, the spice is exceptional, and the mystery/suspense is steadily building and keeping you sucked into this world. These authors seriously can do no wrong.
