This is a good middle grade book. The pace is fast enough and the characters are interesting enough to keep a younger reader interested. There are a lot of terms related to boats and sailing that might trip up some readers, or be interesting to readers who already have that background knowledge or want to learn more about it.

Such a sweet and wonderful book, although there was some confusing elements, especially initially, it was such a sweet and fast-paced book overall.
Also, there’s SHORT CHAPTERS. Like, 1 page chapters sometimes. I feel this really helps with the pace.

Sharon Creech is a YA/midgrade author that I'm always afraid to return to because of how deeply I loved her books as a child. I'm always so scared they won't hold up, not just the rereads, but her overall style.
This was my first read of this one and boy did it rocket to a new all-time favorite. The first chapters are a little bit slow, but once Cody's pov joins the story, things rly get going. It is a beautiful and moving story, elegantly told. I absolutely adore stories about stories and this is a perfect model.

Minor: Emotional abuse
Drowning and the resulting trauma & repression of such are prominent themes/subject matter.
