As someone who is planning on majoring in psychology in college, and going into a career involving criminal psychology, it’s unsurprising to learn that I’ve always been very into true-crime. I had heard the tales of every every serial killer featured in this book. But that’s where I find issue with it. If I hadn’t been familiar with these killers prior to reading then I wouldn’t have learned much of anything. In a lot of instances the backgrounds of these people and/or what occurred after their arrest is not covered whatsoever. So if I hadn’t previously looked into them I would be missing huge chunks of information. And obviously I know you can’t cover every single person’s entire life in one book, but even a few sentences more would have been very insightful. I also really didn’t appreciate the generalization of serial killers. In this book the authors often state things like for example, “Serial killers take trophies” (this is not a quote taken directly from the book I’m just using this as an example) which is not always true. Not every killer does the things they’re saying they do, and I think if you’re going to write a book about them then maybe don’t put them all in the same category. Because that’s just not realistic. They also used words like “batty” or “loony” when describing mental illness which is just ignorant and plain offensive.
