Watch us Rise follows Chelsea and Jasmine as they navigate oppression in their nyc social justice high school

It’s a bit formulaic at times, feeling like it’s trying to hit so many social justice topics in one book, but it’s still a very fun read filled with many charming characters, and it’s nice to find YA that is not entirely centered on the girl-gets-boy trope

It should come with a warning about a Dad with Cancer storyline that hits almost immediately and is central to Jasmine’s arc throughout

There were a lot of great things about this book. I liked that they discussed important topics such as food deserts, women in stem, medical treatment of black women and more. I also liked how they discussed and educated about stereotypes, racism, sexism and the intersectionality of race and sex. I loved a lot of the quotes in this book as well. I also really loved how this book highlighted activists as well so when someone finishes it they can find even more abolitionists literature. I think this book did well on not settling for less and promoting healthy relationships. I liked how they also discussed fat phobia. I think it why probably could have discussed LGBTQA+ issues more but they did promote some LGBTQA+ activists and showed they were supportive it just wasn’t a main theme in the book. For talking so much about intersectionality though I wish they discussed more issues that were intersectional like women from different countries, with different religions, ableism, trans women and more. I think my issues with the book were with Chelsea. She did have character development but I still feel like she needed to really acknowledge her wrongdoings and selfishness which she only did with jasmine and even then she barely apologized. Another part of the book that I didn’t like (I discussed this on one of notes when I was reading in more detail) a highly racist act was seen on the same scale as a petty act and even then the character who did this apologized for one thing they did but they never apologized or did anything to atone for their racist actions and basically said it was “just a joke”. I was really disappointed with that so it made me not like the book as much as I would have.
