Reading in the Time of Corona book 5 -

Man, what a steep drop from the last volume! Seriously, 1 and 2 were so good I practically jumped to get the third volume when my hold came in from the library and it turned out to be...bleh.

3 things bog it down I think -

1. The new artist isn’t TERRIBLE but he’s definitely not my cup of tea. Characters looks don’t look consistent from panel to panel. Sometimes Dex looks menacing. Sometimes she has a nose so big it can be seen from space. Also - I thought Ansel had Down’s Syndrome?

2. I am not a sports guy and the whole soccer hooligan/we have our own permanent seats/curse you scalpers thing just bored me to tears.

3. I THINK the idea is that the investigation awakens a suppressed well of rage stemming from Dex’s military experience, like this dude she only met at soccer games was a squaddie that went down and she had to avenge him NO MATTER THE COST. Didn’t buy it, didn’t care.

HOWEVER. I liked her PI friend from Seattle. The dating a soccer star thing was amusing, especially him being caught in his birthday suit by her friend-zone buddy and Ansel. The mystery itself was pretty good.

All in all disappointing. I am still looking forward to checking out the last trade from the library whenever it opens.

Unfortunately read V. 3 first, but intrigued enough to go back and read the first two volumes.

Rucka is definitely not bringing his A game to this series. Weak attempts at building “depth” in the main character through “War PTSD” comes across as forced and shallow. Mostly makes Dex Parios annoying and the story a bad PI plot. The art certainly does not do this any favors either. There’s enough quality Rucka out there that I will drop this series and move on, which is disappointing.

This doesn't quite have the smooth jive and bounce of the first two volumes, but it does offer up an angrier and more angular Dex in its place. This case is personal to her and there's more joy to her sphere of life (sports, sex, etc), so it takes a road that may be bumpier but there's new scenery.

Bullet Review:

The artist has changed and I'm not sure I'm keen on the new direction. Also, this volume is way more character driven than earlier volumes, which leads to a bit slower of a story.

I LOVE the bit where a character off-handedly mentions that Star Wars EU has been erased.

I can't tell if they brought in a new artist on this one, but there seems to be some subtle changes in some of the characters. It's not bad, it was just my first observation. The first third of the book I was a little underwhelmed. Soccer? Ugh. But by the halfway point I was intrigued and per usual I couldn't put it down. One of Dex's good friends is found beaten nearly to death right outside the stadium where they just watched a soccer game together. He's in a coma and Dex is pissed. This isn't just a case, this is personal! At first she thinks that maybe the opposing team did it, is hooliganism going to catch on in the states? But then she starts to sniff out something in else, something even fishier. Loved it!
