The story was good. I  love that the underlying message was not to wish your life away on being older or younger. Everything has its season. The language was a little too poetic for my taste. It sounds beautiful but makes the story confusing.

really really wanted to like this book!! i liked the premise and the characters, but the super heavy purple prose was just not doing it for me :( some punchy lines, but when it got to the point where it was getting in the way of the story and i was doublechecking every chapter on sparknotes to make sure i understood what was going on, I figured it wasn't worth finishing to me LOL. maybe i'll give the movie a shot u_u

give it a chance if poetry's your thing!

Contains the right amount of melancholy, sentimentality and horror. As I get older, 54 doesn’t seem so old, but merry-go-rounds and mirror mazes still frighten.

I watched the film before reading the book, the book was immensely better than the movie though seeeing it play out first helped me better visualize the scenes and descriptions in the book.

This is a dark fantasy, a spooky read for autumn, about a sinister carnival that comes into town and claims people. I feel like I missed the reason or rationale for why they do what they do. It’s great for the ambiance but I had a hard time following a lot of it probably because I am more used to contemporary prose.
