4.5 ⭐ Found this to be a slow burner that gradually ramps up, weaving a lot of threads simultaneously to a tense ending, but also with some unexpected twists. There are undercurrents that comment on bigger issues such as immigration that give more depth but could possibly be a bit more involved in the plot. I like the consistent development of characters throughout the series.

This was a particularly good Ruth book - adventures in Italy and an unexpected death, plus a murder or two for good measure.

Another great Ruth book. Italy, fascists, Catholics, the beach and an amazing dog. Favorite line from a book: “She will go back to university, become a teacher and hope to beet someone as nice as her dog.”

What a fantastic opening paragraph! A real, wham bam, no messing about start to a book.

Ruth is taken out of north Norfolk and flies to Italy. Elly Griffiths mixes her genres and introduces Ruth to her Italian side more usually seen in her books written as Domenica de Rosa. There is a love interest in the dashing Angelo and mysteries abound as the skeleton is joined by strange graffiti, skulls and a few deaths.

Back in England Nelson’s wife is pregnant, however Michelle is not sure as to who is the baby’s father. Just to add to the mix a murderer with a grudge against Nelson has been released from prison.

A cracking read, a great mystery and always a pleasure to catch up with the complex Ruth-Nelson-Michelle relationship.

I just wasn’t in love with any of the new characters in Italy, and as much as I love ww2, it didn’t quite make up for the rest of the cast for me to truly love this book. Also, the love life drama get a little insane in this one

I've always been a big fan of Elly Griffiths' novels. This time, with events taking place in Italy and with a fantastic opening I was intrigued, however the murder almost takes second place here and the solving of it an after thought. Despite this, the characters and their relationships keep me coming back for more!

A good one! But tbh I rushed through the ending so I could finish it before the grocery store closed.

I’ve liked the other books in this series, but this one was heavy on the soap opera and not so much on the mystery...
