Ughhhhhh I just couldn't finish it... The beginning had a whole lot of promise, with pretty cool world building, a bad-ass MC, and intrigue to boot. Then the bloody romance happens and all goes to hell. It wasn't instalove, but as soon as HE comes on the scene, SHE lets him take complete control and be a jackass. DON'T EVEN BOTHER!!!

An interesting plot with a good worldbuilding but a well tested trope.

If it wasn't for the awful love interest plot, I'd give this book a 3 or a 4, but the love interest plot was absolutely horrible. I'm not a fan of plots based on not communicating at the best of times, and this book was not the best of times. I did not realize this was part of a series, and the ending of this book just made the love interest plot 100 times worse, and not just because it didn't wrap things up. If you're a fan of people pining the entire book when a few words with the other person would fix everything, then this book is for you.

as much as i wanted to love this book, it was just meh. like there were a lot of plot twists and some good scenes that really kept me intrigued, but i just wasn’t super into the whole story. i might be falling into a slump, but who knows (i hope not). there are 2 other books in the series, so i might give them a try and see how it goes

*I received a copy from the publishers via Netgalley.

I was not sure what to expect from this book because I never really paid a whole lot of attention to reviews or the summary. I did notice that the reviews were mixed, so I did not expect to like it. I know I loved the cover and was intrigued by it. I’ve always said I’m iffy about fantasy, but after I have read some, I think I may just be picky with it. This one, for the most part, kept my attention.
The one problem I had with this story is it took me a little bit to like Cohen as a lead. I’m easily caught up with how a main character feels toward the main guy. It took me a little bit to warm up to Cohen.

Overall, I found this to be a fairly clean read. There was some mild cussing. There were phrases said that wouldn’t be curse words the world adopts, but there are phrases said several times throughout the book that I would consider the characters used to curse. There is also a scene where the characters sleep in the same bed.

On a side note, the author answered a question and confirmed there is LGBT in the next book.

romance was kind of boring, felt like i was waiting for it to get to the good part the whole time.
