I won this in a Goodreads giveaway and it was so fun. I’ve never really read a graphic novel before. Alec doesn’t really fit in with people and can’t connect with his twin anymore. He finds his place with his experiments with plants and it all goes awry.

The art- especially at the end?!?!??! STUNNING. I want that tattooed all over me.
I felt like the story was really kinda jumpy at parts, disjointed, but overall the story itself was interesting, engaging and fun.
We need more nature horror like this. WE NEED MORE NATURAL HORROR. So many authors don't get 'what's scary about the woods/nature' correct. I believe Maggie Stiefvater has a very good grasp on it.
Definitely a little.. old for this, but it was still fun and had wonderful messages too.

"Alec, adulthood means you don't have to justify your passions. You don't have to justify your space in this lab. Burn that research if you want. The real experiment here is you."

I'm not normally intro graphic novels, but I was interested because I love Maggie Stiefvater. I didn't previously know anything about the Swamp Thing before, but I am definitely interested in it now! Swamp Things is the backstory of two twins, Alec and Walker Holland. Walker is popular and Alec is more of a nerd who's obsessed with plants. I loved the artwork of the novel. It was beautiful but also gloomy, moody and creepy.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for providing me an ARC to read and review.

“Plant death isn’t as black-and-white as human death.

Maggie Stiefvater is one of my top favorite authors, however, I could not gel with the graphic novel. I try to love them more, but I like the flow of books better. The artwork was fantastic and the story was good. It just didn't come together and translate in my head. High marks for: admiring artwork and Maggie's imagination.

I don't know too much about Swamp Thing, but I'm always down for an origin story. But I had a really hard time getting into Swamp Thing: Twin Branches--not because it's bad (because it's actually well-written and beautifully illustrated), but because the characters are awful. I didn't like a single character in the first half of the book, not even Alec, the protagonist. The book also jumped around with the timeline of the story a bit and that confused me, but that might be because I wasn't very invested to begin with.

Swamp Thing: Twin Branches definitely gets better in the second half though when you see how Alec's experiments with plants start to have unexpected and horrific repercussions. The characters also redeemed themselves a bit in the second half, so I didn't end up hating them by the end.

This origin story also reminded me a bit of Spiderman's origin story, so if you like Spiderman, origin stories, and/or Swamp Thing, I would recommend this book. If not, you can skip it.

I received an eARC from NetGalley and DC Comics in exchange for my honest review.

EGADS! This book is so unusual and engaging. I found the twins very relatable. It was particularly refreshing to see a male teenage protagonist with crippling social anxiety.

Plants. Science. Belonging. Friendship. Brothers. Creepy friggin' plant creatures.

Everything about this was just such a welcome change of pace from everything else that I have been reading lately.
