The great Canadian graphic novel, it is an exploration of what people will put up with when they need to take care of themselves, and how others will take advantage of those because of their lack of resources.

Cried, wasn’t what I thought it was gonna be about but it’s real and it’s heavy. Loved the art and was interested in learning about this work culture I would have in no other way looked into myself.

Honestly, a very upsetting recount of one woman’s experiences while working in the oil sands of Alberta. Having lived in Alberta myself, the sexism and objectification of women is prevalent everywhere. Even in town, where most of the women live with their young children, it’s there. It’s everywhere. Men get lonely and that is supposed to excuse disgusting and illegal behaviour.

So unlike Kate Beaton’s other works, Ducks is a unique and emotional memoir that exceeded all expectations. I started it before bed and then stayed up late to finish it all in one sitting. Please please go read this book and then pass it to someone else.

We Cape Bretoners have always had to live in two places for the sake of the almighty dollar, and this story just feels so validating. This deep yearning from home is portrayed lovingly and carefully by Beaton in lyrics and accents, alongside of a deeper fear of losing one's self to a place. Frightening and phenomenal - this is a must read for anyone who's had to leave home, but also for those of us who have empty seats at the table.

This comic holds complexity beautifully. Beaton holds many polarities without letting go of the complexity inherent in each range. She asks what we owe to each other, and how we survive the harm done to us and the world around us without turning around and replicating that harm. A masterful piece of work.
