This is one of the absolute best collections of short stories that I have ever read in my life and I almost skipped it due to a random commentary suggesting that it is anti-capitalist and somehow related to modern feminism, which are both red flags for me when it comes to literature.
This collection is absolutely thrilling, from start to finish, magical realism, body horror and fables blending together in the gloriously different style of Korean literature, embellished by the immensely familiar themes specific to Eastern European literature. I was obsessed, I devoured it and tried to keep a slow pace in order to enjoy the journey more but I honestly believe that I will revisit this book. Bora Chung and Anton Hur deserve the International Booker, no questions asked and I will be following their works from now on.
There is no favourite story of mine in this collection because there is no weak one, which is absolutely impossible in my opinion. This is Ken Liu level of perfection, but better paced and with a kick to the plexus at the end of each. Highly, highly recommend, but skip the anti-capitalist reviews because they must have been based on different fetishes. This is magical realism at its best, ghost stories, betrayals, fables, body horror and psychological and emotional damage. This is beyond most things published today.

Themes of trauma, gender roles, cycles of violence, and feeling alone in a sea of confusing cruelty. Good Halloween month read.
