Snarky

The narrator points out all the truths most people choose to ignore. He judges everyone and everything that comes in his path.

The writing on this is amazing. Just expertly written. I was living for the prose in this.

And I felt like I knew all the characters. This is a great short read with an "unlikeable" main character.

Mood wise it's kind of a downer. Which left me a little conflicted on how to rate this book. In the end, I gave it 4 stars because it's objectively a well-written story, and I think if my mood had been different, I'd have had a really positive reading experience.

I've listened to three of the Dark Corner collection, and The Tangled Woods was my least favorite. While it was an okay story, it just felt out of place for the collection.

Reginald goes on vacation with his young son and wife. At this park we see the worst of America. Reginald thinks everyone is an asshole, but it never occurs to him that he too is an asshole.

The only truly scary part was a Dream. The rest was just Reginald complaining and being an asshole.

The Tangled Woods was OK. This very flawed man definitely needs a wake up call and seems like he wants life every which way, then none at all. He irritated me a lot, and really pissed me off when you find out something he been doing. Book does accurately detail many aspects of modern families. Book was slow, but I kept up with it. Then once they got to the water park, it fell off for me and I lost interest. It starting getting abstract and I was lost. Didn't do it for me. The writing was good and suspenseful. I just wasn't feeling this story.

So tired of books referencing Harry Potter. Also pretty tired of reading about middle-aged men who cheat on their wives and talk about how much their lives suck. The only time that I thought this book was getting interesting - it was a dream. It's literally just an hour and ten minutes of Reginald whining about everything in his life and doing nothing about it. A horror book isn't really working for me if I'm just waiting impatiently for him to get wrecked. He brought his own comeuppance on himself and deserved worse than he got.

I liked this one with Reggie, Ladette and Thurgood at a Great Wolf Lodge-type vacation setting.
