“Never trust. Never yield. Always guard your heart.”
It took me a while to get into the book but once I was hooked I just couldn’t put it down. I loved the world-building, the characters (specially Oraya and Mische) and the plot was everything. This epic Hunger Games fantasy retelling with vampires and humans should be on everyones TBR. Definitely a must read, specially if you like more plot and less romance. I also love how they all have intricate, special and unique names and then there is Vincent.
Maybe a bit controversial but I really liked Vincent and didn't want to believe he was the villain of the story. I think this was also because I knew how much it would hurt Oraya and I loved their relationship.
The last 100 pages were a roller coaster of emotions. I think I held my breath until the end. Nothing and I mean nothing could have prepared me for that ending. As it is, I’m still in shock. I knew something was going to happen but I didn’t predict this. It's hard to put into words how that ending made me feel but I did end up staring into he wall for a very long time after gathering my thoughts.
Overall I loved this book so much and recommend 100%. Currently reading the second book ASAP.

Oraya is a human who is taken as a pet and adopted daughter of Vincent, king of the Nightborn vampires. She spends her life trying to be as safe as possible from the vampire predators that live all around her. She has the chance to enter into the Kejari, a contest to the death where she has the change to win a wish from the vampire goddess Nyaxia. She hopes to become a vampire and bond with her adopted father to help her feel more powerful. Along the way, she meets other vampires who form an alliance with her and make her wonder if what she has found true all her life may not be as true as she thought.
I enjoyed the romantic elements in this book, the complexity of Oraya's relationship with Vincent, and the themes of being an underdog.

The story line is a dark fantasy romance so expect enemies to lovers, slow burn, betrayal, blood, grief.
Overall: 15 stars out of 5!
Spice: 2/5
If dark fantasy romances are your thing, this book is the best one I’ve read so far! Give it a try.
