I should have DNF’d this, but the final 1/4 of the book hooked me, and the audiobook narration was decent. Otherwise, what a major letdown.

This was so weird. I loved it up until the big reveal at the end of the book… I wasn’t expecting the strong
paranormal
turn this took until it was happening. I wish Morgan had given a bit more foreshadowing beforehand. Ending knocked this down two stars for me, because otherwise this was shaping up to be a five star read with how quick the pacing was and how entertaining the writing was.

Ummm, I'm not really sure what to say about this book...

The last 40 pages had me on the edge of my seat, but the overall ending left me feeling unsatisfied. I'm going to spoil the hell out of the ending, because I can't discuss how I feel without explaining some of the shenanigans that happened in this book.

- What the hell was that random sentence about Alicia imaging Jen crushing a rabbit under her bare feet?
- So, what Alicia's possession somehow passed on to Remy after her death? Was the entity already in their apartment or was this something that followed Alicia around?
- What the hell was going on with the whole Andrea subplot?! "I was just thinking with my clit", UMM EXCUSE ME MA'AM BUT THIS IS A WEDNY'S.
- Why did the author have to kill Jake 😭 and was the bird supposed to be a reference to something I didn't catch in the earlier part of the book?
- Jen's murder was surprisingly triggering. Like, the fact that she expressed genuine fear and still hugged comforted Remy was disturbing, especially when you juxtapose that scene with her eventual demise.
- WHY WAS EVERYONE IN THIS BOOK SO UNLIKABLE!?!?!

I'm going to give this novel a reluctant 3.5 out of 5 ⭐. I'm not mad that I picked it up, but this book absolutely did not need to be 300 pages.

This book is weird and the Ending was so bizarr. I mean this in a good way. It was like watching a tv show, reading this book.

possibly the weirdest book i have ever read. awful ppl doing awful things but you can’t stop reading it??? and ur kinda like ok yes make another questionable choice sure let’s see what happens! i laughed out loud reading this. i can see a lot of ppl being like “this is the dumbest shit what the hell” but EYE personally ate it UP. weird weird weird. horror-lite as in it’s definitely horror but it’s also like why am i giggling?? really easy direct prose (which adds to the horrifying-lite nature??) made it a super quick read. this IS a beach read!!!! oh to read this book for the first time on the beach!! it wasn’t me but i wish it was!! a commentary on parasocial relationships, self help books, toxic relationships, etc.

I didn't know what to expect going in, but I had such a blast! Never have I so enjoyed a bunch of people being absolute nightmares to themselves and others before!

That said, the last quarter
went off the rails super hard. I'm not one to say "don't take it in a fantastical direction" but the set-up was so perfect for a monster that comes from within, instead of something that twists people into...something? Or kills them?? The explanation of the monster, despite stopping the story dead in its path to have a new-ish character lecture at the reader, was really confusing.

I don't know, what if Alicia transformed, or Remy became one over the course of the story instead of abruptly becoming (metaphorically a monster) at the end? Those aren't the only paths obviously but the one we got was kind of...boring?
Still, a roller coaster! Fun time!

i love unlikeable main characters. it makes the read more unique and interesting. i was hoping for something different than what i got, i had a really good plot idea in my head. it’s a really weird take on parasocial relationships, but i liked it. the horror aspect was confusing and didn’t make sense. the ending was fine, i was happy it was over quick.
would of given it 5 stars if the the monster was a manifestation of alicia and remy’s shared obsession with jen, rather than just a random monster who has targeted people before. would have been more impactful idk. i’m tired i need to sleep
