Ho dovuto combattere molto prima di decidere di dare cinque stelle a questo libro. Forse, in quanto reviewer alle prime armi, questo dipende dal fatto che non ho un metodo preciso e solido di valutazione (a differenza di altri, certosini artefici di intricatissime griglie di valutazione). La verità è che non riesco a togliermi dalla testa l'idea che questo libro sia un po' troppo... ecco... come faccio a dirlo... fabiovolista .
Quello che ho pensato infine è stato che in fondo se leggi un libro in tre giorni, se ogni volta che lo chiudi continui a rievocare le scene e i personaggi, se spesso ti capita di sorridere così, inconsciamente, mentre lo stai leggendo, allora al diavolo tutto, che si prenda le sue cinque stelle. Al diavolo l'impressione di un libro un po' ruffiano, al diavolo l'impressione di aver incontrato il Fabio Volo d'Inghilterra, questo libro va letto.
Se sinora non sembra la recensione di un buon libro, sarò più chiaro: ci sono tre aspetti che mi sono piaciuti di questo libro:
- E' scorrevole
- E' realista
- Non è pessimista
La cosa più sorprendente è che questi tre aspetti sembrano inconciliabili, impossibili da mescolare nello stesso libro. Fidatevi, ci sono tutti e tre. E' scorrevole perché Hornby scrive bene, con quel tipo di scrittura dinamica che ricorda, che so, la regia di Wes Anderson o Guy Ritchie. E'realista perché i personaggi sono veri, non sono di plastica (il che mi ha aiutato non poco a scongiurare lo spettro del summenzionato Fabio Volo), così veri che vi troverete i personaggi della vostra vita. Infine, non è pessimista perché malgrado analizzi gli aspetti della più quotidiana, banale, logorata delle esistenze, riesce a farvi sorridere in un perfetto (quasi stereotipato) humor inglese.

Such a well-drawn character Rob is. At 36, he's still working at the record store, still compiling top 5 lists, still infuriatingly childish and self-absorbed. We believe that the author loves this guy, even as he points out his flaws. We know why Laura, the ever patient, ever honest partner, tolerates him and tries to make him better. She, like the author, believes in his passion, as weird and eccentric as it is.

Hated the main character until the last quarter of the book, but I think that was the point. Aggressively British. Hit hard to a thirtysomething who can on occasion be a scumbag.

It seems I’ve aged much better than this book.
What once seemed so angsty-cool and relatable in my 20s now comes off as mostly pathetic and relentlessly self-absorbed. I found myself wanting to smack every last one of the male characters and then give a therapist referral to the women who keep putting up with their sh*t.
I do like the very end. Kudos to Hornby for that. But too little too late.
