Super recomendo!

It took me a long time to finish this book and at the end I wasn’t sure if I liked it as much as her other works. House of the Spirits is one of my favorite books so there was a lot to compare to. After digesting it for a while however it is an excellent and enchanting book. Not giving it 5 stars though because some of the content about the rebellions and political parties could definitely have been trimmed down quite a bit without effecting the story

Read when it first was published. Enjoyed it then and would like a reread.

allende’s writing is ever lovely and timelessly beautiful. first book of hers i’ve picked up since I somewhat read the house of spirits in sophomore literature. eva luna does not disappoint: winding storytelling, a touch of magical realism, and masterfully weaved political history of latin america. truly a wonderful read, only thing is that it needs to be a fast one or you may forget the back story of one of the many many characters and how they actually met eva in the first place.

3.5. The second half or so after Agua Santa was so much better for me and finally it seemed to congeal into something after all the buildup, though I suppose having a messy sort of novel like this with threads going everywhere is the point, and the way of Eva Luna's stories, so this is partly my fault for finding some parts of it a grind to push through. I did want more and better for so many of these characters though. There's a hope and a bittersweet taste to all of it - the stories Eva tells Rolf and the way she writes her own - which is perfect for me. I was a bit out of my depths for the first 1/3 of it, otherwise I would've rated this higher. maybe it wasn't the best book to read on the commute with all the interruptions and instead read in long sittings to lose myself in, like how I read the second half of it, realizing that unless I changed my ways, I was likely going to read this for another month.
