Very emotionally intense book, but I liked it a lot. I only partly struggled with the timeline as it was difficult for me to grasp in what time periods the chapters/ happenings were apart.

Was extremely relatable for any person who grew up in a difficult household where you never understood the challenges your parents went through to get to America whilst also being affected by the unprocessed trauma of your parents.  Was strong representation of a poc household, specifically mexican, but as a non-mexican, it was still very relatable and did make me cry.

This is a great debut novel. It offers a window into first generation immigrants and the challenging, dual worlds they have to face. The battle between family and self identity, the "old world" and the new are all at the forefront of the novel and are well handled and articulated by the author.

Pacing is at times a problem. Some chapters cover hours or days, others covers weeks and months with little to differentiate the passage of time. That broke my immersion at times.

There need to be content warnings. This is a young adult book and it deals with some very heavy stuff, see my content warnings below, that happens to a lot of people. For readers who are currently in crisis or looking to escape from their own depression or anxiety, come back to this when you are in a better state of mind. For people in a stable place, this is an excellent view into why mental health resources are so important, and so very absent, in underserved, metro communities. So many kids, and adults, are being failed. This novel does a good job at addressing those short comings as well.

An excellent read by a promising author!
