Oh this was such a fun romp! I loved the world, and watching these characters deal with things, and I can't wait to read more!

This is the kind of book where, if it were a movie, the trailer would look really good and I would watch it over and over and then be disappointed when the movie came out and it was kinda boring.

With great power comes a great big plate of arroz con mango.

Chilling Effect has some of the cozy, found family vibes of Becky Chambers along with a dash of ridiculousness à la Hitchhiker's Guide. It's fast-placed, often wild, and sometimes funny.

While certainly an enjoyable read, I did feel like some of the characters felt a big two dimensional and the romance was a bit forced. I just needed a bit more out of the characters in order to truly feel for them.

Also, I was promised psychic cats and they barely showed up. I demand more psychic cats!

Reading this right after a Becky Chambers book may not have been the best idea, because this book was just slightly worse in every way. I didn't like Eva as a character, the plot was uninteresting, and the world failed to intrigue me. Why is it always the books with the prettiest covers that let me down?

Sometimes, books just don't come together. The words are all there, but the magic is missing. This is one of those books. It should be perfect: psychic cats, kick butt heroine, scrappy crew, a great sense of humor, and Spanglish sprinkled throughout. But, for whatever reason, it just doesn't sing. This is Valdes' first book. I'll look forward to reading the next and seeing what happens.
