3 1/2 - my rating is seriously going to upset some people I think. . .

Something about this story appeals to me more than "The Hunger Games." I guess I am not a huge Katniss fan, and Tris is a lot more my style. The factions are interesting, and I found the whole book to be slick, fast-paced, and interesting from start to finish. I look forward to reading #2.

I quite enjoyed this. In a future Chicago, 16 year olds must choose their faction. Are they selfless, brave, truthful, friendly, or smart? Their choices will keep them with their family or tear them apart. I enjoyed the characters and the play on class systems in particular.

I read this book only because I have so many students that have begged me to read it. I was really hoping I would love it as much as the kds, but I really didn't. There was just too little story for me to empathize with Beatrice. I just didn't care about the world she was in. Everyone is separated into factions based on personality, and you're not supposed to associate with people from other factions- sounds like a middle school to me. I can see why the kids like it ("OMG it has the word 'sex' in it!"), but I just didn't buy-in to the world and the characters' struggles.
The action scenes were well-written and fast-paced, but there was nothing really interesting or original in the book. Sorry 'bout it!

Unfortunately I am part of the small minority of people who haven’t watched/read the Divergent series. But I really liked this book and I wish I got into the series earlier because I know younger me would’ve love it. Was it sometimes cringy? Yes. But I feel like that comes with the era that this was published so I didn’t rate this too harshly. I enjoyed it and I will definitely watch the movie tonight!

Finally read this one. Very interesting world set up. A quick read, I wanted to keep going. Not my most favorite book ever, but interesting enough that I want to read the next one.
