It's hard for me to rate this book.  I gave it a 3, but it could have been a 4 or a 5 at times.  Let me explain.

I started out really interested in reading Thistlefoot.  I like folktale retellings, although this is more like a sequel written by a different author.  The characters in the story are interesting, clearly with some mystery to uncover, and the setting and conflict are absorbing.  I would have given it a 4 at the start.  But then I got busy, and I was barely reading, and I maybe did a few pages each night before falling asleep.  Therefore, finishing the book took almost a month!  And because it was so drawn out, I know I lost the thread of the story here and there.  And as my attention and interest ebbed and flowed, I was more or less interested in reading, honestly.  Then, I got to the final chapter or two, which was a wonderful tribute to stories and power and history, and I felt like it was the perfect ending.  It made me cry, it was so perfect!

While I really appreciate the message behind this book, I just didn't really vibe with the characters, setting, or plot/worldbuilding. One of our two main characters is too unlikeable and in my mind goes unredeemed and I was never really rooting for him. I don't mind a modern setting, but I do think puppets are creepy and didn't like the traveling puppet show. You're supposed to like the puppets but I couldn't. Kept waiting for them to turn out to be evil or possessed. Finally, I know this is meant to read like a folk tale, but there were far too many logical gaps if you questioned almost anything about the plot or the magic.

This book wasn't anything like I'd thought it'd be, based upon the description.

And it was brilliant.

This book is about memories. And about stories. About how memories are stories; and how stories are made of memories.

I loved this book. It was an innovative take on Baba Yaga, a witch who lives in a house on chicken feet from Slavic Folklore, in that it actually focused on her grandchildren. I loved seeing these two characters with their own flaws and shame reconnect over a common foe and ultimately their generational trauma. A really good read.
