Perhaps it also deserves the fourth star, but I read it in TOO long time and I don't remember some parts (especially the initial ones). I really enjoyed the story itself and thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions of Indian tradition, palaces and dress.
I also liked the parallelism of the two stories, although in the end I preferred the part about Anni's past.
(anyway Anahita > Indira) The story is initially so quiet and welcoming that the final twists have completely blown me away. And then the end. The last five lines destroyed me completely (if you are people who read the last part of the books before reading them, DO NOT do it with this one, because you would spoil everything.)
However, I recommend it because it teaches a lot and I left a piece of my heart with it.

I have a lot of books on my favorite shelf but Lucinda Riley's The Midnight Rose will have a special spot of its own. This book is filled with great dialogue, beautiful scenery and characters that will make you feel their same exact emotions as their story progresses.
Anahita, Donald, Ari, Rebecca and Lord Anthony together create a world of mystery, romance, family tradition and horror in the backdrop of 1920s India and London, England. Anahita's spell binding story will keep you wanting more, I guarantee it.

AMAZING!! Such an intelligent and well written book. I loved all the characters, in particular Indira and Anahita. The Character of Maud Astbury was really well done and the author really twisted her story- It was truly horrible. I recommend to any lovers of historical fiction and romance. Truly Fantastic

Classic Lucinda Riley novel, if you’ve liked her other books you’ll like this one too.

In all honestly I loved the first 400 pages and was wondering how it would all link together. The last 200 pages were a bit unhinged and messy. I wasn’t the happiest about the direction the story took and it seemed to not have a solid basis for the present and past timeline to be linked together… Not that it was bad, it was simply not what I wanted and expected from the author. She is usually a bit better at interweaving present and past.

Nonetheless I loved the past timeline, with Anita’s journey from India to England and her background in medicinal herbs and connection with nature. The past timeline was full of unexpected turns and I honestly wouldn’t have minded if there was no present timeline.

Overall, great historical fiction book, I would definitely recommend it to Lucinda Riley fans.

Impressive...one of the best books I've ever read.
Her style is very easy to read and yet very nice and complete.
In this book I think, more than her others books, she multiplicates the mysteries and keeps you in suspense until the very last line.
The characters are clear and "real" as are the landscape, in Astbury as well as in exotic India.
A must-read!!
