Great essays amidst an array of insignificant essays for me. Her broader essays which focus on a paradigm of thinking and rethinking, are of significance to me. Contrary to those specific one about this or that play from this or that director. They are long and tiresome. Her namedropping skills are impressive though...

*4,25 rounded down, as nothing in life is without its flaws neither is this collection of essays by Sontag. Yet the boldness and style with which Sontag talks about forms of art, and how we need to find new languages, new merits upon which to judge art is exhilarating even sixty years after its release. Whilst these essays are sometimes juxtaposed in a strange way, to read about another author’s opinions on art is incredibly enriching to anyone wanting to understand art better, see it better, talk about it better, and critique it better. A must read for every art (history) student or reviewer and especially interesting for those with an interest in film, literature or theatre.
