This is a drama/romance with a heteroromantic ace protagonist. It can be difficult to get through, especially because of her abusive sociopath father. Stalking, kidnapping, and... abuse that's typical of narcissists and sociopaths. You know: Lying, projecting, slandering, gaslighting (or gaslighting attempts--there comes a point when you don'tfall for that anymore). Triggering? Yes!
I rather feel like reading something... escapist and whimsical now that I've finished reading this.

Page 48: Fuck your internalized capitalist heteropatriarchy. There's nothing unethical about an asexual marrying a friend because of the insurance benefits/financial benefits of marriage. What’s unethical is the system. Insurance companies are predatory. And education should be free, whether or not you're an athlete who got a scholarship.
I don't know why they keep saying "halfway across the United States." Pennsylvania to Misery is at most a third. And maybe this is just me being literal-minded.
Also, would that really be only a 12 hour drive? Maybe it depends on how far east in Pennsylvania and how far west in Misery. Maybe they're in western Pennsylvania, at the border with Ohio, and go to NE Misery, in which case it's extremely NOT halfway across the U. S. This is a huge country.
It took my mother 12 hours just to drive from NW Indiana (1 hour east of Chicago) to Bigotville, the Twilight Zone (Topeka, Kansas).

Coming across Lucy Mason's Ace of Hearts on Twitter was a pleasant surprise, and I immediately bought the PDF (that was on sale!) and started Hesper and Felix's journey.
Ace of Hearts was a light read but still explored topics of abuse and alcohol abuse in a mature way. I loved Hesper's attitude and despite feeling hopeless in the beginning because of her feelings towards Felix, she doesn't let it hold her back. She knows what she wants and won't change her boundaries for anyone. Felix is her other half, trying to navigate his new feelings for Hesper (only
to realise that he liked her the entire time) and learning how to live with her and her insecurities.
Hesper's struggle with her sexuality and the comedic antics of getting married to Felix so that he can graduate was the perfect blend of funny and seriousness. Swapping between Hesper and Felix's POV's felt natural and knowing that Felix was willing to do anything for Hesper to know he loved her made my heart burst.
I would love to read a sequel where Hesper finally gets justice against her dad and cute moments between Hesper and Felix and how they'd navigate their growing relationship.

This was much darker than I expected from the description. It felt to me like a romance and a domestic thriller mashed together, and it didn't work well for me. I think this story had good bones, some good scenes, but they didn't feel cohesive.
Major content warnings for emotional abuse and stalking by the main character's father, who is a police officer. The fact that he can get away with these things because he's a police officer is a major point.
