“Sometimes that roaring is inside your own heart and head, and then it dies down there, too, the wind in all our heads that says we need more, we need to grab what someone else has and steal it away like the hungry wind. Everyone can be a fairy godmother if they help someone who needs help, and anyone can be a wicked stepmother. Most of us have some of that hunger in our hearts, but we can still try to be someone who says, I have plenty, or even Here, have this and How are you?”

A short, reimagined Cinderella in which each character moves toward the truest versions of themselves. So good, thanks Rebecca Solnit!

An empowering, loving retelling of Cinderella that successfully captures the fairy tale feeling and makes it modern and feminist. I want this in classrooms and on my girl's bookshelf!

(I will put some good quotes here)

I like the idea more than the story itself, but I'd still recommend reading it -- Spoiler Alert: she doesn't marry the prince b/c that's not necessarily her best life. I like the idea of thinking of other possible ways a fairy tale can be told that doesn't pigeon-hole females.

I’ve always had a soft spot for fairy tales (still do). But who said Cinderella’s happy ending has to be a boy? This is the version where the prince doesn’t matter. This is a story about there being enough for everyone, about helping people realize that they’ve got more freedom than they think, about kindness. This is the version of Cinderella that I want to read to my baby sisters.

A lovely story made even better because it to counteracts the consumerism, elitism, sexism, and everything else that Disney's Cinderella encouraged in us without our even knowing it.

Absent from this version-Marriage will solve all your problems and women should only aspire to marriage, beauty on the outside proves beauty on the inside, beauty is all you need in life, hard work is for chumps, labor is beneath you, being rich will make you fulfilled as long as you are beautiful.

Present-magic, a powerful and helpful witch, hard work pays off, women are friends rather than pitted against each other for the love of a man, girls can be friends with boys, Cinderella has skills and goals, kindness to animals, bodily autonomy.
