I am really enjoying this series. Bess is great along with all the other characters. Enjoyed this book more than the first.

Bess witnesses a woman hours before her murder with a mystery man and she solves the mystery in between shifts as a nurse in France during WW1. One unrealistic aspect to this book is the number of coincidences. She happens to be treating the same man whose wife he happens to see (and recognize) before her murder. She runs into a husband and wife separately while driving through London, hours apart. She just happens to have a connections' connections' connection in the very small village that is so critical to the whole murder. Still an entertaining page turner.

It's 1917 and British nurse Bess Crawford is escorting several seriously wounded soldiers from France back to hospitals in England. One of the men is a pilot who was badly burned when his plane was shot down. The pilot is clutching a picture of his wife and tells Bess that the hope of seeing her again is all that is keeping him alive. Bess later sees a picture of the same woman in the London newspaper with a request for information from the police. She was murdered the same day that her husband arrived back in England. And, of course, Bess ends up becoming involved with the unraveling of the story. This book combines both a intriguing plot with an excellent reconstruction of life during World War I in England and on the battlefields in France. So far, I am enjoying this series. Keep them coming Charles Todd.

too much back and forth between locations, too many familial connections to keep track of, so much agony over a chance encounter at a train station to make this a book i could even say i liked

Every single person in this book was just TIRESOME. I'm taking a break from this series for a while.

This second book in the series was a bit disappointing. I never felt truly invested in the mystery, and the Bess's detective work seemed a little too easy because people were just inexplicably willing to tell her secrets they won't tell anyone else.
