Four stars because for the most part, I did enjoy this but I was ready for it to be over by 60%.
This book is LONG, over 800 pages. For the first 400, I was actually quite liking the story, but it became very repetitive. And the love interest was boring and needed more development. 
if this is your first SK novel, I wouldn't recommend it.

Though this book has a healthy dose of “things were better back in my day,” King kept me engaged from page 1. This book flies by. Fun read.

Acest lucru fiind spus, luați-vă cana cu ceai sau cafea, gustările aproape și pregătiți-vă de o recenzie lungă.

Azi se împlinesc exact două luni de când am terminat cartea și de când încerc să scriu recenzia ei. Am stat cu foaia și pixul în față de nenumărate ori, am recitit fraze adnotate de mine iar și iar, în încercarea de a găsi cuvintele potrivite pentru a exprima totul despre ea și mi-e teamă că, dacă mai aștept mult, prea puțină lume o să aibă ocazia să ajungă la ea și asta e fix ce nu vreau să se întâmple. 

Cu ocazia asta, un lucru mi-e clar despre mine. Pot să scriu romane întregi despre lucrurile și cărțile care-mi displac dar atunci când iubesc cu adevărat ceva,  nici toate cuvintele pe care le cunosc nu sunt suficiente ca să exprime complet și coerent ce simt.

Am ajuns la carte într-un mod diferit față de cum ajung la majoritatea cărților pe care le citesc și, de asta, țin neapărat să-l menționez aici.

Am citit două citate din cartea asta care mi-au apărut pe Pinterest și au fost suficiente ca eu să adaug cartea direct în wishlist.

Totuși, nu aveam de când să o cumpăr și citesc anul acesta fiindcă știți deja, încerc să termin de citit cărțile pe care le dețin.

Dar, întâmplarea face că am cunoscut câțiva oameni foarte faini care citesc King ( vă pup oameni de pe Discord dacă vedeți asta) și care vorbesc atât de frumos de unele cărți încât eu nu pot rezista. 

Așa am ajuns nu doar să cumpăr cartea anul acesta dar și să o citesc și să o îndrăgesc.

Poate  că aveam nevoie de povestea asta fiindcă am simțit că am citit cartea potrivită la momentul potrivit.

Cartea începe cu Jake, un profesor de engleză, care e racolat de bunul său prieten Al, proprietarul unui local des frecventat de Jake, pentru o misiune.

Al îi spune lui Jake despre portalul pe care îl are în cămara restaurantului său, despre cum acesta duce în 1958 și despre dorința lui de a opri asasinarea lui J.F. Kennedy. 

Îi spune despre faptul că fiecare călătorie în trecut e un restart și că indiferent de cât de mult timp petreci acolo, în realitate se vor scurge doar două minute. Interesant, nu?

După ce Al îl lasă pe Jake să se convingă de veridicitatea spuselor lui, îi înmânează instrucțiunile pentru misiunea pe care o are.

Așa ajunge Jake să preia ștafeta de la bunul său prieten și să se mute în 1958, în încercarea de a opri asasinarea lui Kennedy.

Poate că asta nu e suficient pentru voi. Poate că nu vă interesează absolut deloc subiectul acesta istoric și asta e perfect în regulă. Dar chiar și așa, consider că tot trebuie să dați o șansă cărții. Citiți în continuare.

În primul rând dacă vreți să evadați din viețile voastre pentru puțin, cartea asta e exact ce aveți nevoie.

King a făcut foarte mult research când a scris cartea asta și se simte.

Te ia pe tine ca cititor exact cum Al îl ia pe Jake de mânuță și îți arată portalul. Și nu doar atât. 

Modul în care îți prezintă situația te face curios așa că treci prin portal. Treci prin el și descoperi o lume în care totul e mai ieftin, părul lung la bărbați nu e la modă, îmbrăcămintea e atent aleasă de oameni și totul e complet diferit de ceea ce cunoști. 

Vezi cât de greu e să dai de oameni într-un secol în care telefoanele mobile nu există, aflii despre cât de simplu și ieftin era să îți iei o mașină sau o casă. Despre cum, dacă ești suficient de prudent, te poți descurca într-un secol trecut și poți chiar să îți găsești locul.

Cine nu ar vrea să guste și să simtă puțin din timpurile acelea?

Cartea asta nu-i King-ul obișnuit la care te aștepți. Nu-i horror, nu are scene prea înspăimântătoare și chiar poate fi citită de oricine ( recomand 16+ totuși).

Cele 800 de pagini trec pe nesimțite când te lași prins de povestea asta cu time travel, de personajele pe care ajungi să le îndrăgești, de poveștile de viață, și, mai ales, de povestea de iubire pe care o avem aici. Da, ați citit bine. It's a chunky love story cu time travel.

Deși inițial intri în poveste pentru toată treaba cu spionajul și opritul asasinării lui J.F.K. , ajungi să rămâi alături de Jake și personajele din jurul lui. Ajungi să iubești alături de el, să educi și să ajuți copiii cărora le predă, să-ți faci prieteni printre oamenii cu care lucrează. Ajungi într-un final să-ți găsești locul, asemeni lui.

Dar apoi apare lupta asta în mintea ta ca și în mintea lui Jake : Ce sa aleg? Salvez viața lui Kennedy sau pe a mea?

Nu vreau să vorbesc prea mult despre cât de minunate sunt toate relațiile dintre personaje fiindcă vreau să vă convingeți singuri de asta. Divinizez relația dintre Jake și Sadie în mod special. Trebuie să o descoperiți.

Cu toate că am trecut printr-o grămadă de emoții cu cartea asta, de la râs la plâns ( în special pe final), de la empatie profundă până la ură deplină, nu am simțit nevoia să schimb nimic.

Am iubit cartea asta din tot sufletul meu, m-am regăsit în Sadie și m-am regăsit puțin aproape în fiecare interacțiune dintre ea și Jake. Nu cred că voi putea vreodată să trec cu adevărat peste cartea asta și peste acest final care mi-a rupt sufletul în două.

It thrills, it chills, and it made time travel exciting and terrifying at the same time. I loved it.

💭 T H O U G H T S

I picked 11/22/63 up at a secondhand book sale awhile ago, and it had sat neglected on my shelf ever since. Why you might ask? Mostly because of it's immense size, but also because I was apprehensive of it being Stephen King (no horror books for me). When the opportunity to buddy read it arose, I knew now was the time, or it would continue to sit untouched on my shelf for years. All that to say, I am so glad I finally picked it up!

King has a gift for telling a story. His believable dialogue and signature quirky pop-culture references were a welcome addition to one of the most unique and fascinating stories I've ever read. It was certainly one of those books that made me stop mid-sentence to re-read what I'd just read and then to reflect on what was happening or what I would do in Jake/George's place.

As an avid Montreal Canadiens fan, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention one of my favourite scenes when King pokes a little fun at the expense of the Toronto Maple Leafs. "I also bet four hundred on the Canadiens to beat the Maple Leafs in the Stanley Cup Series, and won... but that was even money. Chump change, cuz, my pal Chaz Frati would have said." I'll admit that definitely brought a smile to my face and earned King some definite bonus points in my books.

11/22/63 intertwines fact and fiction to create a fascinating look into time travel and the consequences of our choices or how life would be different if certain things didn't happen. It made me question whether if given the chance I'd alter the past knowing it could have devastating consequences on the future. It's really quite something to stop and contemplate, and I always applaud when an author is able to do so.

And then there are the characters. Jake/George is tasked with the impossible and I particularly enjoyed his thought process and journey. He also came across as being selfless in wanting to help change Harry Dunning's future rather than changing his own. Oh how my heart broke for Harry. Then there is Al who plays such a short, but important role. And of course, Sadie. She easily became my favourite character and I wanted everything to work out for her.

It is certainly evident that the time and research put into constructing this book must have been thorough and extensive. I never once expected to get a beautiful love story, and that is honestly what make this book an absolute gem!

The sole reason this isn't a five-star read is because of the length. It is extremely detailed, lagging around the midway point. I felt there were big chucks I could have skimmed and still came out the other side with the same experience and takeaway.

To anyone looking to test out Stephen King 11/22/63 is the perfect place to start. There are still some gruesome, violent, and stomach churning scenes, but they are not the focus here. Additionally, I highly recommend tandem reading a physical/digital copy along with the audio for an enhanced experience. I can definitely see myself picking this up for a re-read at some point in the future, which isn't something I can say too often.
