Perhaps I would have liked this more if I were reading the text rather than listening. I like Lehane--a lot--and like a dark and twisty plot. But there was something about the book that let the plotting structure get in the way of the enjoyment. I'm not opposed to surprises. I'm down with red herrings--and this book is the ultimate red herring fileted and sauteed.

But--it was...clunky. At times, it even felt as if whole sections were deliberately misplaced in the text. Twice, I pulled the disc out of the player to make sure I'd inserted them in order. Two and a half stars, with a disclaimer that perhaps the ability to read/turn back to review earlier text might have made the book seem like less of a hot mess and more like a cleverly written story.

I've never seen the movie, but I had a general idea of what happened due to seeing certain scenes while my husband was watching.

Shutter Island is the story of U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule who are sent to Shutter Island. Shutter Island is the place for the insane, who are a danger to others. The people here have committed horrible atrocities, and one of these people Rachel Solando has escaped. Rachel drowned her three children. As a story bears down on the island Teddy and Chuck must race to discover how this woman escaped a locked room, and what really is happening on Shutter Island.

From beginning to end this book hooked me. It may have been a very different experience I believe had I seen the movie, but going into this completely blind made for an intriguing read through twists and turns. I knew it was quite a dark book, but I don't think I was prepared for how dark.

I am definitely interested to see what else this author has written.

I was recommended this book by my occupational therapist named Ethan. I had no context to this book and he didn’t even offer a hint of a description. He just said “I know you like to read and this is basically the only book I like”

I didn’t bother looking up what it was about and just started reading when it was available on Libby. Surprised to find it was going to be a little murder mystery. Love that.

Little did I know as I was sitting at the Apple Store waiting for my phone repair, reading. That 200 pages in, things start to really turn the f up.

This was incredible. I was so happy to have had no spoilers. I didn’t even know that this was a movie. My friends were like yeah the movie is “extremely dark and twisted” and in “the mfing book”

This is a reread for me and that’s so rare.

Thanks to Ethan for the recommendation. I love when friends nail it.

This book was amazing! I couldn’t put it down and was just wanting to dive deeper and figure out what happened. I wanted Teddy to get off the island so bad and then the ending came to gave me chills. 5 stars! Everyone needs to read this book!

Very close to four stars. There's definitely nothing wrong with Lehane as a prose writer: he creates a very strong, eerie atmosphere and some solid characters worth following through the book. The setting of the novel, in a mental hospital on an island off the coast of Massachusetts, is incredibly suspenseful, and the story is fun, nerve-wracking, and even poignant at times. The problem is that the ending, while it is logically convincing and has some emotional power, is also kind of mundane and trite. Lehane is going for a mind-blowing twist, and he almost pulls it off, but it seems just a little cliched after all the build-up. Still a worthwhile read.

This book was fantastic! Mr. Lehane is an amazing storyteller, and this one was one of his best.

He did a great job with the character of Teddy Daniels. The writing really made the reader feel like they were accompanying the U.S. Marshall on his strange journey to the island and the hospital for the criminally insane.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good suspenseful mystery.

Something was off about it to me, felt like the book could have had it backwards where teddy was actually a detective and it was just a delusion that he’s Andrew laedis
