Amazing storytelling, considering Mengele was alive when this book was written

This book was read as part of my world culture challenge and it was also my first book from Ira Levin. I really enjoyed that this story felt like it could be a real event. The fact so many of the third Reich fled to Southern America and Dr. Mengele conducting even more experiments to restore the power to the Third Reich.

The story was a bit slow moving but was well worth the read. 4 stars. Audio.

I found the story to move quite slowly at parts but most descriptions to be thought-out and necessary. How many times can you say a character has a crooked nose before you realize that is an important message from the author? It was an interesting tale of strange circumstances and possible conspiracies. It is relevant and was a story worth reading.

Fast read, close to a screen play. This is one of many books I have read recently that have also been made into movies or miniseries. Many I haven't seen.

This is also the first book by Ira Levin that I have read, and look forward to reading more. I went into it with just the short blurb, though I wasn't surprised by the bombshell roughly halfway through. With that mystery solved, action wound down towards the conclusion. I liked the details, the characters, and the pace. There was a little too much discussion between characters to bring plot elements forward. Finally, this dates to a land before cell phones, and what a place that was.

I especially liked this quote, towards the end of the novel. These days television seems to have the opposite effect :( Overall rating - 3.5 stars.

"I say in my talks it takes two things to make it happen again, a new Hitler and social conditions like in the thirties. But that's not true. It takes three things: the Hitler, the conditions, and the people to follow the Hitler."

"And don't you think he'd find them?"

"No, not enough of them. I really think people are better and smarter now, not so much thinking their leaders are God. The television makes a big difference."

Literary naziploitation. An outrageous story, but never something that loses control. Josef Mengele versus Simon Wiesen.. Eh no, Yakov Liebermann. The Angel of Death is up to something and it's up to the Jewish Nazi hunter to stop it from happening. And that's all you really need to know before you start reading. With no upfront knowledge you get one hell of a mystery (why all those murders? how are they connected? what are those goddamn Nazi's up to?!) that, as soon as things get clear (such a delicious revelation!), turns into a full-blown man against man-thriller. With a killer ending. You gotta love the irony there. My kind of book.

Very enjoyable. Not as creepy as Rosemary's Baby which was absolutely incredible but still good.

A conspiracy after WWII involving Nazis. Some of the names meant nothing to me. This made some of the nuances beyond me.
