So I enjoyed this, but I'm not sure if it's going to be super memorable to me? I can't really think of anything much I have to say in terms of a review -- nothing I disliked, but nothing I super loved either.

CW: Abusive relationships, slavery, racism, misogyny

I like the decision to not include homophobia even though it's historical fiction (would be nice if he had dropped the racism and sexism as well - though there wasn't as much of it as there could have been).

This is a sweet story and I liked the plot. You've got illusions and magic shows, with a dash of actual magic. And young queer love.

emotional abuse vs. physical abuse, who will win? shaun david hutchinson always succeeds with putting his characters THROUGH IT lmfao.

throughout this whole book i imagined evangeline as the iconic dominque jackson!

in conclusion: wil deserves the moon and stars, teddy deserves to ROT, and jack was written like every average white boy between the 1900s and 1970s with an air of ~mystery~ but we love him for it.

I’m at the 30% and Im bored out of my mind. It’s repetitive, nothing happens, the characters are flat. For more in depth analysis go read 1 star reviews, they all say the same and I can’t agree more with them.
It’s a big big deception.
